Leaded Water
On April 25, 2014, the financially-
insolvent city of Flint, Michigan -
former heartland of America's
automotive industry - switched
from the imported Detroit's water
system to the local Flint River in
order to save $4 million during the
construction of a new pipeline to
Lake Huron scheduled to open in
2016....

"By early 2015, higher lead levels
were showing up in the water...
[Virginia Tech civil engineering
professor and head of the Flint
Water Study Marc] Edwards said
the lead leaching into the water
was predictable because of the
chloride content of the water....'If
the corrosion inhibitor had been
used, this would have been
deemed a success,' Edwards said.
'As crazy as it sounds.'"
—John Wisely
Was Flint River water good enough to
drink?

The Leaded Water series explores
the resultant chaotic governance,
negligence and state of emergency
that eroded the public health,
infrastructure and morale of the
orphaned satellite of the greater
Motor City.

These works are built upon white
acid-free Bristol board. Acrylic paste
is crushed irregularly into the
paper, creating an almost-invisible
textured adulteration of the
smooth foundation. India ink is
then dragged with joint knives and
squeegees in compounded layers
over the modified surface, catching
up and unmasking the corruption
and corrosion beneath. The
resultant impedimenta define the
gritty sludge of a once vibrant
urban landscape.
